The science behind the sky, and the care behind the experience.

Astronomical calculations

Astronomy Engine by Don Cross provides astronomical calculations, including celestial positions and Moon phases. We use version 2.1.19 under the MIT licence and copyright notice.

Our Moon illumination uses Astronomy Engine’s three-dimensional Sun–Moon–Earth geometry for the calculation time. The same fraction determines the displayed percentage and phase shading. The display refreshes on page load, every minute while visible, and when returning to the page. It is a calculated illustration using a fixed photograph; it does not reproduce local viewing tilt, libration or eclipses.

Local weather

Weather forecast data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), through api.met.no, licensed under CC BY 4.0. Cosmic Identity selects, groups and presents forecast data in its own calendar summaries. Forecasts can change; the source is credited beside the forecast as well.

Seismic activity

Earthquake records are provided by the USGS real-time GeoJSON feed. Cosmic Identity filters the global seven-day feed to earthquakes of magnitude 1.0 and above within 500 km of the selected area, computes approximate epicentral distances, and displays up to 20 recent records. Catalogue coverage varies and records can be revised. These are observed events, not predictions or emergency alerts.

USGS copyright and credit policy. We use the data feed, not third-party photographs, maps or logos. Earthquakes Canada is linked for regional Canadian information; its data are not imported in this release.

Space weather

Storm-scale readings, planetary Kp and dated GOES solar-flare reports come from NOAA / National Weather Service Space Weather Prediction Center. Cosmic Identity selects and formats these readings; the display is not an official NOAA product or endorsement. Global indices are not a measurement of personal exposure or a local aurora forecast.

NOAA/NWS reuse and disclaimer terms. Government information is generally public domain unless otherwise marked. Original data ownership and source identity are retained; no NOAA logos or outside imagery are reproduced.

Aurora and local viewing conditions

The aurora sub-box uses the NOAA SWPC OVATION forecast, its global geographic grid and official Northern and Southern Hemisphere forecast maps. We sample the nearest model grid cell, preserving its observation and forecast times. Its 0–100 model value is not a calculated personal probability of seeing aurora. Maps display their own independently updated timestamps.

Astronomy Engine calculates apparent Sun altitude at the selected city and model forecast time. We pair this with the nearest available MET Norway cloud forecast within 90 minutes. Moonlight, terrain and light pollution are not scored; visibility is not guaranteed. Decorative aurora artwork is separate from the scientific model and official maps.

Clouds around me

Cloud cover and height-layer coverage use MET Norway's Locationforecast complete data model, under CC BY 4.0. We select and format total, low, middle and high cloud coverage and fog when available. These are model forecasts, not observed cloud-type identifications. Cloud layers can overlap.

The visual cloud guide uses original Cosmic Identity descriptions, with a reference link to the WMO International Cloud Atlas. No Atlas photographs, diagrams or passages are reproduced.

Places and time zones

Place data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). City and birthplace suggestions are provided through Photon. Coordinate-based time-zone lookups use TimeAPI.

Reflection and interpretation

Astrology, Human Design, numerology and Chinese zodiac reflections are interpretive frameworks. Scientific data providers do not supply or endorse those meanings. Our explanations and journal prompts are presented separately from astronomical and weather measurements.

Beginner introductions use original Cosmic Identity wording. Human Design reference links include Jovian Archive’s introduction to the system. The Chinese Zodiac calendar overview is informed by the Smithsonian’s explanation of the animal and element cycles. A reference link is an acknowledgement, not a claim of endorsement or that another organisation’s text, diagrams or artwork are licensed for reproduction.

Artwork and responsible reuse

Cosmic Identity’s approved brand artwork remains part of the experience. Specific outside imagery is credited with its source. Third-party material remains subject to its own rights and licence; this page does not grant permission to reuse it.

We retain software copyright and licence notices and review source terms when adding outside material. Sources and credits will be updated as the experience grows. For a credit correction or rights concern, please use our Contact us form.
